Prog DONCASTER MINSTER 2005

A piece of music trapped inside a composer's head for nearly 20 years finally got a performance at this concert on 26 June 2005.

Music Service teacher and composer James Belbin-Wood originally conceived his Sinfonietta in C ("Now is the Time of Unsettled Dreams") in 1987 but was unable to commit it to paper due to failing eyesight. After a successful operation in which his sight was partially restored and following an approach by the orchestra to compose a piece for them, Mr Belbin-Wood saw an opportunity to realise the composition.

It is written in the style of the 20th Century's greatest symphonist, Dimitri Shostakovitch and represents an attempt to capture both his character through thematic motifs and orchestration, but also to exploit the developmental musical structures present in the symphonic form.

There are four movements

The other items making up this highly successful and enjoyable concert were "Ruslan and Ludmila" by Glinka, and "A Shropshire Lad" by George Butterworth.

The Beechfield Youth Orchestra represents the culmination of our many carefully graded Music Centre bands and orchestras. The Orchestra was established in 1960 and its members meet regularly on Friday evening.

The players are very proud to be able to give the first performance of this piece by our own Mr James Belbin Wood, and have enjoyed working towards this premiere performance.
